Best Hikes With Kids: Western Washington & the Cascades

Author: Joan Burton with photos by Ira Spring

For anyone in the PNW, options are seemingly endless for places to go hiking and backpacking.  While there are some great electronic resources, I find this book fits this niche of backpacking with kids perfectly.  Each hike shows whether it is backpackable or just a day hike, plus provides a relative difficulty rating.  A description of the hike, including photos and descriptions of the author’s experience there finishes out the teaser article.

My copy was bookmarked and well used after only a few months of owning it.  I have a color coded system, so when I find time on the calendar, I only have to find the yellow bookmarks to decide what to do next.  Once done, that becomes a green bookmark:

Obviously, this is a book that doesn’t update itself.  Be sure to check out online resources or call a ranger to get up to date information.  But for that difficult task of narrowing down all those great hikes in the Puget Sound Region (and beyond), grab a copy of this book and start turning those pages green!
