A frequent complaint about tents is that the diagram of faceless people sleeping in them is too optimistic.  That complaint is spot on.  Here is the reality, captured in hour-by-hour snapshots of a real night with 3 people in a 3-person backpacking tent:

Hour Three: sure is cramped in here.  Is the tent shrinking?

Hour Four: this literally happened.  Yes, it scared me.

Hour Five: who said you can’t fit 3 people in here?  Look at all that empty space!

Hour Six: one glorious hour of sleep before the battle restarts…
