The 2017 backpacking season is rolling to a close, and this is the time when I gather the wishlist items and do some research.  On that list is another pack for my kids.

I’ve posted about my kids backpack selection methodology before, so this post cuts to the chase.  As of October 2017, here’s the list of recommended packs in the 40L area:

REI Tarn 40
  1.  REI Tarn 40: The replacement to the Passage 38 I’ve recommended before, this pack hits everything you might want for your budding backpacker.  Lowest price, low weight, hipbelt pockets, bottom straps, stuff pockets, and enough space to max out weight.  $100, 2.63 lbs.

Osprey Ace 38

Osprey Ace 38: The biggest hangup here is the lack of hipbelt pockets, but this is the lightest pack in the class.  So add a couple aftermarket pockets to store snacks on the trail and call it a day.  Osprey is known for fantastic packs, and this one looks like it matches their reputation.  If you think 38L is too small, bump up to the 50L version.  38L: $140, 2.4 lbs; 50L: $160, 2.94 lbs.

Gregory Wander 38

Gregory Wander 38: A step heavier than the first two choices, but filled with features.  This pack also doesn’t cinch down as small, so little waists and short torsos beware.  I recommend double checking the sizing, especially for younger backpackers.  Like the Osprey, this pack also has a 50L sibling, so check that out if you want it to last longer or you think your child can handle the extra size/weight.  38L: $140, 2.75 lbs.; 50L: $170, 3.4 lbs.

fox40
Deuter Fox 40

Deuter Fox 40: And if those 3 options don’t work for you, the Deuter Fox 40 rounds out the list of recommended packs.  This one lacks the bottom straps, hipbelt pockets, and a raincover.  It’s also on the heavier side for this volume.  Approx $110, 2.88 lbs.
