I like to find different sources for backpacking food, especially to switch it up or eliminate certain ingredients from the standard dehydrated meals. So instead of fighting my kids for the Backpacker’s Pantry Risotto with Chicken, I like to pull something from the soup aisle at the local grocery store.
For the last few trips, I’ve been enjoying Dr. McDougall’s Soups. These come in a lightweight (but bulky) paper cup, and you just pour in your boiling water to the line, wait a few minutes, and enjoy. It’s also great that all of these are Gluten Free (one of my sons has an intolerance), and many are organic and/or Vegan. And finally, we’re talking about $2 each for these. Here are my quick reviews:
Vegan Black Bean and Lime Soup: This is my favorite. It feels like a nice heavy meal and is the most likely to satisfy that backcountry hunger. It looks…well it tastes good! 340 calories, 94g. More nutritional info here.
Pad Thai (Gluten Free): No, you should not expect Pad Thai here, but this one still works for me. The flavor is relatively unique, but I think that in a good way. Just don’t think Pad Thai. And my kids like this one the best. 220 calories, 56g. More nutritional info here.
Tortilla Soup with Baked Chips (Gluten Free): This one seemed to be the least satisfying of the 3 soups I tried. It had some good flavor, though, so don’t shy away from it. Give it a try as a quick trailside lunch. 200 calories, 56g. More nutritional info here.
